Royal Orchid Sheraton

An icon on the Chao Phraya River for over forty years!

In 2024, after visiting Bangkok for all these years, it was the first year we slept at accommodation located on the magnificent Chao Phraya River. We chose as our first hotel the famous Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel and Towers, an icon on the Chao Phraya River and tipped by many as an excellent place to stay for our first nights in Thailand’s capital. We ate well there, slept wonderfully, received an outstanding massage and most of all enjoyed the beautiful view this hotel offered us. Below we elaborate on our experience and you can read if a stay at this five-star hotel is something for you or yours.

About the Royal Orchid Sheraton in Bangkok

The Royal Orchid Sheraton, officially opened on July 22, 1983 by Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother of Thailand, has been a favorite with business travelers and tourists alike for over forty years. This is partly due to its location and unique “Y” shape, which gives each room a stunning view of the Chao Phraya River. With 28 floors, this five-star hotel is the only one on the Chao Phraya River that guarantees an unobstructed panoramic view of Thonburi, a historic part of Bangkok. The hotel has excellent facilities, including two swimming pools, a first-class spa, several restaurants and lounges. So we highly recommend staying here when visiting Bangkok.

Where in Bangkok is the Royal Orchid Sheraton situated?

After a comfortable Premium Economy flight with EVA Air, we arrived at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport around 2:30 pm. The Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers, located on the Chao Phraya River, had arranged a pick-up service. Without delay due to customs or luggage, we were quickly greeted downstairs in the arrivals hall and taken to the hotel in a comfortable car – excellent service! The hotel is accessible from both Bangkok international airports (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang) within 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

The hotel offers easy access to the ferry terminals on the Chao Phraya River, making it easy for visitors to Bangkok to take a scenic and inexpensive boat tour of numerous historical sites such as The Grand Palace and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).

What to see and do in the area of Royal Orchid Sheraton?

Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the Royal Orchid Sheraton is a perfect base. Thanks to the free shuttle boat, which runs daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. (and that every 30 minutes), you’ll be at the pier of ICONSIAM, Bangkok’s most luxurious shopping mall, within minutes! Then the shuttle boat continues to Sathorn pier for a sky train.

Both piers have a direct connection to the public River Express Boat, putting part of Bangkok at your feet. Stopping at iconic sights such as The Grand Palace, the breathtaking Wat Arun (also known as the “Temple of Dawn”). A short walk from the ICONSIAM and Sathorn piers brings you to a BTS station from where you can easily, quickly and cheaply travel around Bangkok by skytrain. In no time you’ll be in front of several of the city’s (cultural) hotspots, such as King Power Mahanakhon, Siam Paragon, the Erwan Shrine, Jim Thompson House and the EmSphere, which opened by the end of 2023.

A big advantage of the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel is its location opposite ICONSIAM, Bangkok’s most luxurious shopping mall. The hotel’s free shuttle boat takes you right across the river where you can enjoy super-luxury shopping and lots of dining options. For example, there is SOOKSIAM on the first floor, a modern version of a floating market. Next door to the Sheraton is River City, for even more shopping fun, often combined with arts and culture.

What we really loved about the area around the Royal Orchid Sheraton was exploring Talad Noi (Talat Noi). A lively neighborhood filled with historic houses, local stores and workshops. Everywhere you see impressive sculptures and street art. Don’t miss the Photohostel & Photocafe of a Dutch photographer friend, but also visit the Sol Heng Tai Mansion where you can browse after buying a drink, or the unique coffee house/art gallery, Hong Sieng Cafe and Gallery. In short, there is plenty to do close to the hotel!

And as icing on the cake, the Royal Orchid Sheraton is only a 15-minute walk (or 10 minutes by cab) from Yaowarat Road, the beating heart of Chinatown. A place you really shouldn’t miss during your visit to Bangkok!

The lobby of the hotel

Upon arriving at the luxurious Sheraton, we were immediately captivated by the spacious lobby. This place elegantly combines Thai gold and teak accents, with the highlights being large Elephant Parade elephants – the Durian edition was our favorite – and a replica of the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred Buddha statue in Thailand. In between some playful elephant statues, we saw a Thai lady in traditional dress playing the Khim, a Thai stringed instrument.

The hospitable staff immediately provided a warm and appreciated welcome. The check-in process at the main desk was smooth, something we really appreciated after our 12-hour flight. We looked forward to relaxing in our reserved suite.

Our suite, the Junior River View Suite

Before going to the Royal Orchid Sheraton, we heard that the hotel would be in somewhat older condition. But considering that it has been around for forty years, we were pleasantly surprised. Our Junior River View Suite was clean, comfortable and in excellent condition.

The 55 m2 suite began with a living room, equipped with a large desk, refrigerator, tea and coffee making facilities with a traditional coffee maker. There was a triple sofa, a coffee table and opposite the sofa a closet with a safe and a large LCD TV. The view of ICONSIAM from both the living room and bedroom was breathtaking. A tip for the hotel: two armchairs in front of the window instead of one would be perfect.

A sliding door separated the living room and bedroom. In the bedroom, the spacious double bed of the Sheraton Signature line caught our attention – a luxurious bed with a thick mattress that ensured a wonderful night’s sleep. Next to the bed was a long dresser and opposite the bed was another large LCD TV. To the left was a walk-in closet with bathrobes, complimentary slippers and an iron. The bathroom had both a bathtub and a spacious shower stall with a rain shower.

In short, the suite was great and provided a fantastic start to our Thailand trip in 2024!

Two pools, a gym with sauna, the club lounge and the Mandara Spa

The facilities at the Royal Orchid Sheraton are truly top notch! We thoroughly enjoyed the Garden Pool every day, beautifully located in the hotel’s large, green garden. And the day before our departure, we pampered ourselves with a visit to the Mandara Spa. The hotel also has a second pool, a gym with a sauna and several conference rooms.

The Garden Pool located in the beautiful lush garden

Part of the land to its neighbor, the Portuguese Embassy, was donated to the hotel in the past. The gift houses a beautiful green garden full of tropical plants and trees. Here you will find not only a jogging and tennis court, but also the Garden Pool, open daily from 07:00 to 19:00. This huge pool, surrounded by sunbeds and equipped with its own pool bar, looks more like a resort pool on a tropical island than a pool in a hotel located in the metropolis of Bangkok. The greenery surrounding the pool and the ability to enjoy snacks and drinks by the pool enhance this feeling.

An area of the pool is specially equipped for small children who can play and splash safely there. A special addition are the Portuguese peacocks that drop by from time to time – although they officially belong to the Portuguese Embassy, they seem to prefer to visit their neighbors for a snack.

A suggestion for management would be to post a sign encouraging guests to think about reserving sunbeds with towels, as some guests behave rather antisocially in this regard.

The Terrace Pool

The other pool, the Terrace Pool, is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers beautiful unobstructed views of the Chao Phraya River. Although smaller and deeper than the Garden Pool, the Terrace Pool is ideal for swimming laps. This pool is close to the hotel’s gym and sauna, which means you can dive right into the refreshing water after a workout or sauna visit – all with breathtaking views!

The Sheraton Gym

Located in a long hall, the Sheraton Gym is open 24/7 and features a wide range of fitness equipment, including TechnoGym machines and various weights for strength training. With several dining options, including the delicious Thai restaurant Thara Thong and fantastic breakfast options at Feast, a daily workout at this convenient gym is sure to be welcome!

The Mandara Spa, originated in Bali

The Mandara Spa at the Royal Orchid Sheraton is among the top ten hotel spas we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying so far, and we can tell you we’ve visited dozens of them! This is not surprising, as Mandara Spa is a renowned wellness brand, originally founded in Bali. Today, you can find Mandara Spas in countries such as the U.S. (including Hawaii), Egypt, Oman, Malaysia and, of course, Thailand, where the only Mandara Spa is located at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers.

The Royal Orchid Mandara Spa is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and features nine treatment rooms, some of which offer unparalleled views of Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River. The spa has an extensive menu that can be viewed on the Mandara Spa website. Reservations can also be made through the Mandara Spa site, but of course you can also ask a staff member at the hotel’s front desk to arrange a reservation.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed in the lobby of the spa, where we enjoyed delicious homemade ginger tea during an intake session. Everything was explained about the Royal Thai Massage and body scrub session we had booked. The exquisite massage lasted an hour and was tailored to our needs, as an injury that had been discussed during the intake meeting was expertly taken into account. The total wellness package including body scrub lasted two hours, after which Ilonka returned to the lobby of the spa feeling reborn. Our thanks go to the wonderful team at Mandara Spa Bangkok!

The Royal Orchid Sheraton Club Lounge

Since 1986, there has been a Club Lounge at the Royal Orchid Sheraton, currently located on the 27th floor and exclusively for guests with Club rooms (on the 25th to 28th floors). This spacious lounge, divided into several cozy sitting areas, is beautifully decorated with comfortable sofas and chairs. The breathtaking views of Bangkok are the very best here, in our opinion!

At the Club Lounge, you can enjoy delicious food and drinks at different times of the day. From a leisurely breakfast to afternoon tea, various cocktails during happy hour and a wide selection of hors d’oeuvres. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time this time to fully enjoy the Club Lounge, but we are sure we will return to this fantastic hotel again!

The smaller meeting rooms, seven of which have full river views, range in size from 44 to 200 m2. The hotel is ideal for weddings, galas, ceremonies, lectures, conventions, presentations, meetings and other business events.

Good eats and drinks (with a spectacular view over the Chao Phraya river)

For a successful vacation or business trip, delicious food and drink is of course essential, and that’s where you’ll be at a good spot right at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers! The hotel features four restaurants, a cocktail bar and a lounge bar – something for everyone! For international cuisine and a fantastic breakfast, head to Feast, for authentic Italian flavors, Giorgio’s is the place to be, and for delicious Thai dishes in a classic setting, Thara Thong is the place to be.

We ourselves spent a lot of time at the Siam Yacht Club, a partly outdoor lounge where guests can enjoy stunning river views with scrumptious meals and delicious cocktails in hand. The Siam Yacht Club also provides indoor seating where culinary enjoyment and relaxation are sure to come together!

The Lobby Lounge

Every morning we walked toward our delicious breakfast at Feast and passed the informal lobby lounge. A bar with large sofas and armchairs where guests can enjoy a cup of coffee, an (alcoholic) drink or a quick snack. In all honesty, we didn’t have a chance to enjoy this for a moment, so we can’t pass judgment on the Royal Orchid Sheraton’s Lobby Lounge.

Feast

The sumptuous breakfast (buffet) at Feast was truly a feast. But before we elaborate on that, let us introduce you to the other culinary delights that Feast, the hotel’s contemporary all-day restaurant, has to offer. During the week, dinner is served every Monday through Thursday with a rotating culinary theme from around the world, while the Seafood BBQ Dinner Buffet is available every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Feast features a huge indoor dining room with air-conditioning and a spacious outdoor terrace, where you can enjoy an array of international dishes daily between 6:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday brunch is an absolute must if you are a guest at the Royal Orchid Sheraton! Chef Attakorn Bua-aui heads the team of chefs at Feast, who make sure that guests lack nothing throughout the day. What a culinary feast!

Breakfast

Breakfast at Feast, which we enjoyed early in the morning outside by the river, offers a plethora of options. From an egg and noodle station to an array of international dishes from Indian, Thai and Western cuisine. The fruit buffet offered an impressive variety that we had not seen at a Thai hotel before. We were also pleased with the wide selection of breads, cakes and other pastries.

Giorgio’s

Despite Giorgio’s being the first Italian restaurant in a Bangkok hotel, the lunch was unfortunately a bit disappointing; we had expected more. The prawns were served in such a little portion for its price and the salad with burrata and antipasti lacked the passion for Italian cuisine. Fortunately, the wine was well flavored and well chilled. Perhaps it would have been better to opt for pasta or pizza. It is definitely worth giving Giorgio’s a second chance, given the good reputation of this authentic Italian restaurant in Bangkok.

Siam Yacht Club, a must visit!

The Siam Yacht Club was one of our favorite spots at the Royal Orchid Sheraton! This modern restaurant and bar where east meets west, offered us delicious cocktails and dishes while watching the many boats on the Chao Phraya River during sunset. A prime location and a golden tip for our readers to enjoy the golden hour! The design and atmosphere both inside and outside are amazing. We loved the style and we are sure to visit the Siam Yacht Club again when staying in Bangkok!

Thara Thong, Thai cuisine at its best!

The culinary experience at Thara Thong was truly phenomenal! This restaurant is known for its authentic Thai dishes and traditional decor with teak furniture. During our dinner, we enjoyed traditional dance performances from different Thai regions (north, south, east and west), which can be admired from Thursday to Sunday from 7 p.m. onwards. It is helpful to take this into account when booking a table.

Our evening began with a romantic drink outside during sunset, followed by taking a seat at a traditional Thai table inside. At Thara Thong, it is customary to remove your shoes and sit on cushions on a raised platform for an unforgettable Thai dining experience.

The dishes were all culinary delights! From the fish cakes and shrimp in a crispy coating to the mango sticky rice for dessert – everything was delectable. The interpretation of a Larb salad but with crab and avocado, the Pomelo Salad served in a beautifully hollowed out pomelo, the sublime massaman curry with beef and the pineapple fried rice with shrimp were the absolute highlights of the evening. It is clear why Thara Thong is considered a top restaurant in Thai cuisine! Our compliments to the entire team at Thara Thong!

We were cautiously positive when we knew we were going to stay at this hotel, but we wanted to give the Royal Orchid Sheraton, which is part of the Marriott group, a chance.
