Montis Resort in Pai
An extraordinary resort in the peaceful “savanna” of Pai
In July 2023, we visited Montis Resort, located just outside the city center of Pai. After completing most of our Mae Hong Son loop (counterclockwise), we were ready for a few well-deserved days of rest in a comfortable resort. For our much-needed break, we chose one of the best luxury accommodations available in Pai.

Where in Pai is Montis Resort located?
Montis Resort is nestled in a serene, green environment surrounded by mountains, only two kilometers away from Pai’s city center. This tranquil resort offers a peaceful retreat, far enough from the hustle and bustle of places like Pai Walking Street, yet conveniently close to popular tourist attractions such as the Pai Canyon, the Pai Land Split, the Sai Ngam Hot Spring, and the temple with the giant Buddha on the hill, the Wat Phra That Mae Yen.
During our four-day stay, despite the convenient shuttle service, we chose to walk back twice. A leisurely stroll of approximately twenty minutes led us from the lively Pai Walking Street to the peaceful oasis that is Montis Resort.
Unique architecture
Upon arrival at Montis Resort, one immediately senses the serene and relaxed atmosphere it exudes. Despite the busyness of Pai, especially in its city center, the resort provides a tranquil sanctuary. The unique architecture displayed throughout reflects thoughtful design, combining luxury with tranquility. We did notice that some buildings have fallen into disrepair due to Covid-19 and are currently not in use. Nevertheless, we still had a wonderful stay! The friendly staff added that extra touch of hospitality, consistently providing kindness and service throughout our visit.

The different types of rooms at the Montis Resort in Pai
Montis Resort offers a variety of rooms with playful (African) elements spread across its vast grounds. Each room is equipped with efficient air conditioning, a minimum 42-inch television, a safe, a mini fridge, and tea and coffee facilities. The clean bathrooms are stocked with various amenities such as toothbrushes, soaps, and a hairdryer. Free WiFi is readily available throughout the property.

Deluxe Savanna View and Deluxe Skyline View
These rooms are centrally located within the Montis Resort grounds. Both rooms, measuring 49 square meters, can be booked with either a double bed or two single beds. Unlike the Safari Villa, these rooms feature spacious shower cabins instead of bathtubs.

Our amazing place, the Safari Villa
After a few challenging nights during our Mae Hong Son loop, the luxury and comfort of the spacious Safari Villa measuring 60 square meters was a welcome change. The villa was clean and inviting, featuring a comfortable double bed and efficient air conditioning strategically placed away from the bed (a definite plus for us). The daybed can serve as an additional bed for a child.
The villa offers convenient amenities such as bedside tables, a shelf under the 42” television, and a wall-mounted table where we could do some work online. A unique feature of the Safari Villa is its circular design. Our private patio provided a covered seating area, ideal for relaxation and conversations about our adventures.

Outside, there is also a sizable terrace to be found that is partially covered. Under the covering, guests can sit comfortably and relax.
The bathroom, complete with double sinks, a bathtub, and a separate toilet area, had only one minor drawback: the lack of a separate shower. The short shower hose made showering in the bathtub somewhat uncomfortable. However, on a positive note, the choice of shower gel, shampoo, and body lotion with menthol provided a refreshing experience.
Initially, we had some thoughts about the safari-themed decor used in the rooms. However, to be fair, it did not bother us at all. In fact, we found it to be a well-executed and fitting addition. The architect and the team behind it put careful thought into it.

Montis Suite and Montis Pool Villa
For ultimate luxury, there are the Montis Suite and Montis Pool Villa. The suite measures 90 square meters and features a freestanding shower and jacuzzi. The Pool Villa is breathtakingly beautiful with two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a living room, an enormous terrace with a private pool and jacuzzi. More information about this spacious 400-square-meter villa can be found on Booking and/or Agoda.

The many facilities at the Montis Resort
At Montis Resort, you won’t be bored. In addition to a swimming pool and indoor and outdoor gym , you can play pool and foosball in the recreation room. You can even borrow bicycles at Montis Resort.
The lovely pool
We spent most of our time outdoors enjoying the fantastic swimming pool. There were comfortable loungers with cushions and umbrellas placed by the poolside. Occasionally, a staff member would check if everything was to our liking or if we wanted something to eat or drink. The fruit shakes tasted delightful in our peaceful oasis!

The gym
For those seeking extra exercise options, guests can use the indoor gym equipped with cardio machines and weights. We found the outdoor exercise park particularly enjoyable. This playful course offered an active way to move around while staying true to Montis’ style.
The Montis recreation room
The recreation room provides entertainment with a pool table and table football. Additionally, there is a cool game room where board games can be played. A projector screen is available for watching movies as well.
The only hotel in Pai with a real conference room
Montis Resort stands out as the only accommodation in Pai with a conference room. This is convenient if you plan to organize a business presentation or small conference in Pai.

Bike rental
Unfortunately, we discovered this too late; Montis Resort offers complimentary bicycle rental. This allows guests to easily cycle to Pai Walking Street or quickly grab a snack or drink at the nearby 7-Eleven.
Parking area and Shuttle Service
We made good use of the free parking lot by the lobby. Our reliable car was parked there after navigating more than a thousand winding turns on the road to Pai. If we didn’t feel like driving ourselves, we could take advantage of the shuttle service that dropped us off near the beginning of Walking Street. Scheduled pick-ups were also available, though we often chose to enjoy a leisurely walk back.

Food and Drinks
Given the abundance of quality restaurants and street stalls in Pai Walking Street, we chose to have only breakfast at Montis Resort. However, their extensive menu for lunch and dinner suggests ample choices.
Breakfast
During our visit, breakfast options were limited due to low season conditions; instead of an elaborate buffet, only a few choices were available. While breakfast was acceptable, we felt that for a luxury establishment like Montis during low season, it fell short of expectations. We hope that management will make improvements in this regard.

The restaurant
Montis Resort’s restaurant serves both authentic Thai cuisine and international dishes. Think Club Sandwich for lunch or pad krapow, pad thai, or fried rice for dinner. As we did not try these dishes personally, we cannot provide an assessment.
The café
The Montis Café serves as both a bar and coffee shop; however, it was closed during our visit in July 2023. Nevertheless, the shakes and coffee served to us in our room or by the pool were excellent.
