MANOHRA CRUISE

A majestic journey through Thai culture while enjoying culinary delights

In February 2024, we enjoyed the enchanting Manohra Cruise along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. The combination of an excellent dinner and a romantic cruise past numerous attractions is always a highlight of our stay in Bangkok. The city offers various options for dinner cruises, but only a few rank at the very top. One such option is the Manohra Cruise, renowned for its exceptional service and quality. This is hardly surprising, as the cruise is operated by the team behind the renowned Avani+ Bangkok and Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort. On our next trip to Thailand, we definitely plan to stay a few nights at these top-notch accommodations. The Manohra River Cruise truly reflects the quality of Thailand!

Boarding location and free shuttle boat service with timetable

The Manohra Cruise departs from the pier of the luxurious  Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort. If you are coming from central Bangkok, the hotel offers a free shuttle boat service from Sathorn Pier. This service is available from 08:15 am to 11:15 pm, departing every half hour. Another option is the free shuttle boat from ICONSIAM, Bangkok’s most luxurious shopping center, departing every hour from 12:20 pm to 08:20 pm.

For your return trip to Sathorn Pier, a free shuttle boat is also available from the Anantara Pier, running every half hour from 08:00 am to 11:00 pm. This allows you to easily and comfortably start and end your cruise without worrying about transportation.

Our adventure began with a charming boat ride from the hotel where we stayed to Sathorn Pier, which brought us to the Anantara Pier in just fifteen minutes. This location is also home to the elegant Avani+ hotel. We had previously visited this area during a trip in August 2019 when we visited one of our favorite rooftop bars in Bangkok, SEEN. To our disappointment, this popular sky bar was closed for renovation during our recent visit, so unfortunately, we did not have the chance to visit  this amazing location on this occasion …

Warm welcome at arrival

Upon our arrival at 18:30 at the boarding point, we were warmly greeted by the team of the Manohra Lounge, located on the charming terrace of the Anantara Riverside. Here we were treated to a refreshing drink and an assortment of delicious, typical Thai snacks. While relaxing on the spacious terrace along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, we had about half an hour to ask questions and unwind before boarding our antique boat. .

Discover the charm of Manohra Cruises

The fleet of Manohra Cruises consists of beautifully restored antique rice barges, which were essential for trade and transport on the Chao Phraya River and other waterways in Thailand in the 18th century. These historic boats , transformed into floating museum pieces, now offer the opportunity to experience an authentic Thai dinner while observing  the enchanting skyline and landmarks of Bangkok.

The fleet includes three boats: the Manohra Star, the largest, can accommodate up to sixty guests; the Manohra Moon can accommodate forty guests; and the Manohra Sun offers an intimate experience for up to thirty people. Each boat  has retained its historical charm and is equipped with modern amenities such as kitchens and toilets on the lower deck, while the upper deck provides space for atmospheric dining, including a small bar area. The open sides of the upper deck ensure a cooling breeze during the cruise.

We took our seats on the Manohra Moon for a two-hour journey that took us past both historical and modern architecture along the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The detailed, hand-carved Thai decorations in the barge’s teakwood interior caught our attention immediately upon boarding – a testament to authentic craftsmanship and a beautiful setting for a romantic evening.

Travel and route along the Chao Phraya River with the Manohra River Cruise

As soon as we were sitting comfortably, a friendly hostess provided us with an extensive explanation of our culinary journey along the Chao Phraya River. The cruise travels northward from the Anantara Riverside pier, goes just past the iconic Rama VIII Bridge, and then returns to the boarding point.

During the cruise, we were given a map that partially outlined our travel route. Having done dinner cruises before, we knew that we would also pass by landmarks like Asiatique with its iconic Ferris wheel. Important sights we passed included the Grand Palace, the Wat Arun, and the National Museum of Royal Barges. We also sailed past various embassies and cultural hotspots that highlight the rich history and diversity of Bangkok.

From the water, we enjoyed the illuminated cityscapes and the lively river life. Each visit to the Rama VIII bridge remains special for us; it is a beautiful bridge that evokes dear memories and was one of the first landmarks we cherished in Bangkok. The Taksin Bridge, named after one of Thailand’s greatest kings, symbolizes the connection between old and new Bangkok and offers a unique view of the city’s evolving landscape.

If you are looking for a unique experience in Bangkok, consider the Manohra Cruise. This exclusive dinner cruise combines outstanding service with a relaxed atmosphere and lets you enjoy exquisite Thai dishes while cruising along some of the most picturesque and historic spots in the city.

Premium Set Menu during the Manohra Cruise

On board the Manohra Cruise, we enjoyed the Premium Set Menu, a seven-course dinner including unlimited non-alcoholic drinks for 3,900 THB per person. For wine lovers, there is the option to upgrade to unlimited wine for 4,900 THB. It is especially pleasing that all prices are inclusive of the  10% service charge and 7% tax, which is often not the case with other providers.

Each course was a culinary surprise. We started with an amuse bouche of Alaskan King Crab, served with a spectacular dry ice effect. The appetizer consisted of grilled tiger prawns combined with a refreshing Thai salad with cashews, lychee, and pomelo. The rich Tom Kha soup was generously filled with seafood such as squid, scallops, and prawns.

The main courses, both the fish and the meat dish, were excellent. As avid lovers of Massaman curry, which we have tasted in many variations, the version onboard was a true revelation and immediately jumped to the top three of our favorite Massaman curries. The entrecôte, used as the main component of the dish, was of superior quality: tender and perfectly prepared. This allowed us to combine the various elements to suit our tastes.

The dessert was, as expected, Mango Sticky Rice, served with two types of rice and deliciously sweet mango. We concluded the meal with an assortment of cute petit fours in the form of typical Thai ‘kanom’, small sweet desserts.
