Mai The Sky Bar, Chiang Mai
The highest sky bar in Chiang Mai
In July 2023, we had the pleasure of visiting Mai The Sky Bar, located on the 22nd floor of the Meliá Chiang Mai Hotel. At 63 meters high, this sky bar is the tallest in Chiang Mai and offers impressive views of the city and surrounding area. For visitors not staying at the Meliá Hotel, there is an entrance fee of THB 250. However, this is immediately refunded in the form of a voucher, which you can use for food or drinks at the sky bar.
Our visit was short, as we were passing through. Earlier that day we had a relaxing four-hour spa treatment at Zira Spa in Chiang Mai’s old town. Later that evening we were guests at Kiti Panit, an excellent restaurant in Chiang Mai specializing in Northern Thai cuisine. The evening promised to be a wonderful end to our last day in Chiang Mai and our adventure along the Mae Hong Son trail.

The design and interior of Mai The Sky Bar
Mai The Sky Bar, which is spread over two floors, offers fantastic views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding areas. The second floor, also called the “Lower Rooftop,” houses a modern bar surrounded by sleekly designed chairs. Low round tables with comfortable chairs complete the space. Here we enjoyed cocktails while admiring the view of Doi Suthep.

The atmosphere at Mai The Sky Bar in Chiang Mai
During our visit to Mai The Sky Bar at sunset, the atmosphere was casual and calm. It seemed that most visitors were guests of the hotel and it was not overcrowded. However, this may also have been due to the fact that our visit was on a Sunday. Despite the quiet ambiance, this contributed to a relaxed and pleasant experience.

Different theme parties
The atmosphere will therefore change considerably during the themed parties organized on Meliá Chiang Mai’s rooftop terrace. These parties, featuring Thai and international artists/djs are usually organized on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. onwards.
According to a number of expats we met in Chiang Mai, Mai The Sky Bar transforms into “the place to be” in Chiang Mai during these events. So it is definitely worth planning your visit around one of these lively and energetic themed parties.

Excellent service
The service at Mai The Sky Bar in Chiang Mai is absolutely outstanding! As soon as you enter the rooftop terrace, you are immediately given a friendly welcome by a professional and extremely amicable team. The staff is very attentive and ready to inform you about the range of delicious dishes and drinks and about the sights you can see from this sky bar . Their expertise and hospitality contribute to an overall fantastic experience.

The Mai The Sky Bar menu, what can you eat and drink there?
Mai The Sky Bar’s menu is compact and includes an assortment of Spanish tapas, pinchos, satay sticks and desserts – mostly perfect for sharing. In addition, the drink menu offers a selection of about 20 cocktails, some with a Spanish twist. Of course, there are also options for soft drinks, beer, wine and spirits.
During our first visit to this impressive sky bar in Chiang Mai, we unfortunately did not have much time. Since we were invited for dinner at a nearby restaurant, we opted to order only a small snack to go with our cocktails.
Check out Mai The Sky Bar’s menu.

Snacks
For our snacks, we chose the Tostas Platter with crab and avocado, as well as the pulled pork with a red onion compote. Both were delicious and we would definitely order them again. Unfortunately, the snack we were most looking forward to, the croquetas with Khao Soi filling, was a disappointment. Too much flour had been used in the roux, resulting in a mealy filling and the distinctive Khao Soi flavor was unfortunately overshadowed.
On our next visit, we already had our eye on the Dulce de Leche Tiramisu. On the table next to us, it looked delectable and the couple who ordered this dessert clearly seemed to enjoy it. We look forward to trying this delicacy for ourselves!

Tasty cocktails!
Our chosen cocktails were simply exquisite! We began the evening with two drinks from the ‘Bartender Tailored Cocktail’ section, named after the forests and mountains of the Chiang Mai region.
The first cocktail, ‘Bosque de Chiang Mai,’ is a delicious blend of whiskey, cranberry juice, lime juice, honey, cinnamon and pasteurized egg whites. The second cocktail, ‘Frambuesa,’ combines vodka, orange juice, lime juice, raspberry syrup and pasteurized egg white, among other ingredients, into a delectable drink.
While talking to a bartender, we learned that he was pursuing mixologist training. We spontaneously asked him to prepare two special cocktails for us. The result, two delectable and unique cocktails whose creations we hope will appear on the menu in the future.

Our experience
Although our visit was short, we felt right at home at Mai The Sky Bar. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. Although we felt the food could be slightly improved, the cocktails were absolutely sublime! Of course, the main attraction of Mai The Sky Bar is the unobstructed view of the Chiang Mai skyline. We thoroughly enjoyed the setting sun and the twinkling lights visible into the distance after darkness set in.
We are sure that on our next visit to Chiang Mai, we will book several nights at Meliá Chiang Mai, if not just to visit the team at Mai The Sky Bar more often.
A fun detail: all the staff at the hotel have a “Spanish” nickname. From left to right; “Gracias Romina, Andres, Gonzalo, Maya, Franko, Valentino, Martinez, Tack and Jam. “Lo pasamos muy bien con vosotros!”
