MAHANAKHON

Let’s start with a bang! The Mahanakhon SkyWalk is a dream for thrill seekers and a nightmare for people with fear of heights. But WOW what did we enjoy the Mahanakhon SkyWalk, it truly was super, SUPER cool!

If you don’t know yet, the Mahanakhon SkyWalk is the highest observation deck in Thailand and it has an inside and outside area. Apart from the fantastic 360 degree view, the absolute high point is the glass platform on the 78th floor which is equivalent to 310 meters high! The glass platform is attached to one side of the building, that’s all. The rest just hangs in the vacuum, just like a large balcony, so you look into the depth!

Nice and special to see of course, but that is not all. For the complete Mahanakhon SkyWalk experience you have to go one step further… literally! But let’s start from the beginning…

Exterior of the King Power Mahanakhon building in Bangkok, Thailand

The Mahanakhon, or rather officially King Power Mahanakhon, has become the tallest rooftop bar in Bangkok (and Thailand), thus knocking the Baiyoke Sky Bar off its throne. Baiyoke was Bangkok’s tallest sky bar for a long time, but of course it was bound to happen sooner or later…. We wonder when Mahanakhon will be dethroned….  Is the Mahanakhon now the tallest building in Bangkok and in Thailand? No, not quite, because the new residential/commercial tower next to the super-luxury ICONSIAM shopping center is just two meters taller. As far as we are concerned, the King Power Mahanakhon building is the most extraordinary tall building in Bangkok and who pays attention to a few meters.

The Mahanakhon is not to be missed when you are in Bangkok. First, of course, this is because the standout is very tall, and therefore it can be seen from many places in Bangkok. But what is most special about this iconic building in Bangkok and what makes it impossible to overlook is its extraordinary design!

Pixel Tower or Tetris Building

The nickname of the King Power Mahanakhon is Pixel Tower or Tetris Building, this because the entire building consists of glass blocks that look like pixels or the blocks from the old school game called Tetris. But halfway and at the top of the King Power Mahanakhon building, there are just missing blocks, as if they have fallen out. This gives the building a bizarre shape.

The building includes an indoor and outdoor observation room, the Mahanqkhon CUBE, a very special restaurant (Ojo Bangkok) and rooftop bar (Sky Beach) and a King Power duty free store, with well-known brands and special Mahanakhon souvenirs. In addition, there is also a luxury apartment complex of The Ritz-Carlton Residences Bangkok (floors 23 to 73) and an insane hotel with an outdoor swimming pool will open on May 11, 2022. You can read more later in this article.

Because the outside of the building also consists almost entirely of glass, it sparkles towards you! And at the very top, if you bend your head back as far as possible, you’ll see the infamous glass of Mahanakhon SkyWalk!

DID YOU KNOW
King Power Mahanakhon and the Mahanakhon SkyWalk were designed by the German architect Ole Scheeren.

King Power Mahanakon wordt ook wel de Pixel Tower genoemd

To the SkyWalk!

Before you go to the Mahanakhon SkyWalk, you first must go through a metal detection gate and your bag goes through a scanner just like at the airport. In addition to the usual prohibited items, it is also prohibited to take food and drinks to the Mahanakhon SkyWalk. Bags larger than 22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm are not allowed on the Mahanakhon SkyWalk. To the right of the cash registers are free lockers (to be used from 10:00 to 24:00), which you close with your passport number or telephone number as a combination of numbers. Ideal if you have come to the Mahanakhon SkyWalk with too many things. Once you have gone through the gates you immediately walk into a special corridor! Don’t forget to look up because on the ceiling you see Bangkok upside down!

Special projection elevator

Soon after you step into the elevator, you realize that this elevator is no ordinary elevator. As soon as the elevator starts to move, the sound comes on and all the walls turn into screens on which moving images of Bangkok can be seen. For people with fear of heights, this is probably an ordeal because you feel like you are floating over Bangkok. In 50 seconds (which literally fly by) you have arrived on the 74th floor!

Bangkok behind glass

On the 74th floor is a large hall with floor to ceiling windows, here you have a great 360 degree view of Bangkok. Bean bags have been placed in front of these windows, so you can really take the time to see Bangkok in chill modus, because you need some time for that.

There are also interactive touch screens, so you can learn everything about the most important sights of Bangkok. Instead, you can also download the app in advance. The app, Mahanakhon SkyWalk VR is only fully activated when you are actually on this floor.

Greetings from Bangkok!

On the 74th floor you will find a red postbox from those good old days, you can still send an old-fashioned postcard (40 Baht) with greetings from Bangkok’s highest postbox! But probably that is something for later as you are eager to go to the 78th floor rooftop!

From the 74th floor you take an escalator to the 75th floor and from there you take the beautiful glass elevator to the 78th floor. Now there is almost no way back!

The last meters ..

As soon as you step out of the elevator you are immediately in the open air and you will be overwhelmed by the amazing view over Bangkok! You feel, hear and see Bangkok from a height of 310 meters! You can see for miles on a clear day! You see a bar in a haze, but soon your eyes are drawn to the glass platform, the SkyWalk!

The Glass Tray experience

Time for the real thing, the moment is there! You have put the protective covers over your shoes and the Glass Tray is just one step away. You will undoubtedly look at how thick the clear glass is and wonder if the glass is strong enough, reassure yourself, stop thinking and take that last step! Once you are on the Mahanakhon SkyWalk and you dare to look down, you really see how high 310 meters are! WOW! Cars are like toy cars and people can hardly be distinguished!

How it feels to stand on the glass platform with Bangkok far below you cannot be described, you just have to experience that for yourself! Certainly so!

The Peak! (soon to be called Sky Beach)

The Peak is really the very highest point of King Power Mahanakhon and the highest point you can stand on in all of Bangkok. You have to go up one last set of stairs for this! From The peak you have 360-degree uninterrupted views of Bangkok! The view is ridiculously beautiful! Seeing the sunset from The Peak is really fantastic! But also large dark clouds and rain showers in the distance are great to see!

So even if the glass platform is a step too far for you, King Power Mahanakhon is still a must to visit!

Grab a seat, watch the sunset, have a cocktail (or two), and remember that the sky’s the limit at Sky Beach.

When to visit the Mahanakhon SkyWalk

The most popular time to visit the Mahanakhon SkyWalk is around sunset, which is incredibly beautiful because you see Bangkok in daylight but also the beautiful lights that come on when it gets dark in Bangkok. Come well before sunset, it will take awhile before you get to the top. Most people will want to be there around 5 PM. Come earlier if you want to be ahead of the real crowds. In Bangkok, depending on the seasons, the sun sets between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Through this site you can see exactly what time the sun goes down.
