The relaxed island Koh Lanta in Thailand actually consists of 2 islands Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi. These two islands are connected by a bridge. Tourists actually only visit Koh Lanta Yai. When people talk about Koh Lanta, they usually mean Koh Lanta Yai. The island is located in Krabi province and is about 70 kilometers south of Krabi Town. This makes Koh Lanta easily accessible.
On Koh Lanta are a lot of beautiful and fun activities to do. The island is about 80 km2 and has a lot of everything. The atmosphere is very tranquil, you can really relax on the beautiful elongated beaches. The island attracts other visitors than the surrounding islands. People come here to relax, explore the beautiful surroundings and make nice trips. You can tell by the atmosphere.
There are nice, special, cozy bars and restaurants where you can eat and meet nice people. For big parties and crowds you better go to the party islands in Thailand such as Phuket, Koh Phangan and Koh Phi Phi. Look for the nicest bars on Koh Lanta here
The best travel time for Koh Lanta is November to March, this is the high season. In these months all restaurants and bars will be open and most tourists come to the island. The sea is then usually calm and clear.
We were on Koh Lanta in July, this is the low season (April to October). The sea is not at its best then and there are often high waves, which can also be fun of course! We had a great time and would have liked to stay much longer because there are so many beautiful and fun sights on Koh Lanta! Our tips: Explore the island on a scooter, follow a cooking lesson at Time for Lime, go to Lanta Animal Welfare and let a dog out on the beach and join the cozy vibe on the island!
Even if you just ride around on your rented scooter you can discover many funny and beautiful things for yourself. We have almost never eaten as good as in Yang Garden, a superb restaurant run by two young chefs in a beautifully decorated garden. The accommodations on Koh Lanta are really there for every budget, there are many budget, middle class hotels. But also delicious luxury resorts with swimming pool directly on the beach. We think that Koh Lanta can be a nice destination for families with children because of the fun activities and quiet atmosphere. Certainly check the best restaurants of Koh Lanta in this list!
There weren’t many other tourists on the island in July, at times you might have the impression that you are the only tourist on the island! But in high season this might feel a bit different, although we are convinced that it will never be as crowded as Phuket in high season. Most of the beaches and hotels are located on the west coast of the island, from some of the beaches you can snorkel very well. The southern tip of the island is quite hilly. We thought this part of the island looks a bit like Koh Phangan but without the Full Moon parties. On the east side of the island you will find the super nice village Old Town and the Koh Lanta Old Town Pier. In this area the Instagram pictures are taken on the swings by the sea!
