KLONG KHONG BEACH (FREEDOM BAY)

Klong Khong Beach is situated in the shade of the much frequented and adjacent Long Beach. But that doesn’t mean that this beach is less cozy! Klong Khong Beach has a nice selection of bars, restaurants and hotels. A number of bars on this beach are even quite popular and have more than earned their stripes over the years!

Klong Khong Beach is about 3 kilometers long. Swimming in the sea is unfortunately is far from ideal. Although the water is usually clear and calm, there are many rocks in the water. This makes swimming during low tide almost impossible. Because the beach also slopes quickly and there are many rocks on the bottom, Klong Khong Beach is less suitable for small children. The middle class hotels and luxury resorts therefore often have a swimming pool for a refreshing splash. But also a number of cheap hotels on the beach have a (small) swimming pool, so you don’t necessarily have to stay in a luxury resort if you want to be able to cool down.

What makes Klong Khong Beach different from the other beaches on Koh Lanta is probably the relaxed atmosphere on the beach. Precisely because Klong Khong isn’t one of the most popular beaches, it feels less commercial or crowded. That also attracts other people. Khlong Khong Beach is also called Freedom Bay or Hippie Bay, that tells something.

Here and there the green / yellow Bob Marley flags flapping in the wind. And before, during and after sunset there is always happy hour somewhere. Decorative beach bars with nice lounge spots are alternated with restaurants, massage parlours and (luxury) resorts. But there is also a wide range of budget accommodations.

The further south you go the quieter it gets on Khlong Khong Beach. There are still parts here and there where there is no hotel or restaurant.

Bars at Klong Khong Beach

The Freedom Bar is known all over Koh Lanta for its full and half moon parties with live acts and DJs. But even when there is no moon they come up with a reason to party! At the Freedom Bar there are also beautiful fireworks shows to see! During the day and during sunset it is a nice place to relax on one of the lounge cushions and meet other travelers. Furthermore there are the Fin’s Stoned Bar and the Mushroom Bar. Here you come to chill out in one of the many hammocks or nice seats with reggae sounds in the background.

Eating at the beach of Klong Khong

There is a reasonable supply of restaurants on Klong Khong Beach, the restaurants below are located directly on the beach and have views of the sea and the sunset. As far as we are concerned, these are good restaurants to dine or have a cocktail at Klong Khong Beach.

Holy Cow

This is where the tastiest burgers pass by, including vegetarian burgers! But there are also good pastas and Thai dishes. Whatever you choose, all dishes are prepared with care and you’ll see that back on your plate! Holy Cow is located approximately in the middle of Klong Khong Beach.

Krit Friendly

In the south of Klong Khong Beach is this nice little family restaurant Krit Friendly. Although they also serve other dishes here than fish, the grilled fish of the BBQ is really recommended!

Lanta Meeting Point

Good food with your feet in the sand in this cozy and popular Thai family restaurant. You probably won’t find the cocktails cheaper, because during happy hour you only pay 79 baht at Lanta Meeting Point!

Sleeping at Klong Khong Beach

Besides a few newly built resorts, there are also quite a few nice budget and middle class options at Klong Khong Beach. If you like to be able to cool off at any time of the day we recommend a hotel with swimming pool. At Klong Khong Beach this doesn’t mean you have to sleep in a luxury resort, because many budget hotels also have a swimming pool here!

The Lanta Wild Beach Resort is a small family resort with bungalows close to the sea. There are different types of budget bungalows, including friendly priced family bungalows on the beach. The furnishing of the bungalows is basic but neat and have a nice seat in front of the door. The resort is run by a very sweet family.

The Lanta New Coconut Bungalows also fall under the middle class segment, the small basic bungalows have a refrigerator and air conditioning with a small patio and hammock. There is also a swimming pool for the necessary cooling.

The Coco Lanta Resort (eco) has a good value for money, the popular resort is located on the beach and has a swimming pool. The bungalows are small but nice and have everything you need. This resort is also committed to the environment and less plastic on the island. Upon arrival you will receive a bottle that you can refill with water unlimited during your stay.

FIND A NICE PLACE TO SPEND THE NIGHT IN KOH LANTA

What else is there to do at Klong Khong Beach?

Klong Khong Beach doesn’t really have a village where everyone goes in the evening. Many people choose to have a drink at one of the cozy beach bars. But also on the main road that largely runs parallel to Klong Khong Beach are a number of shops, including travel agencies, scooter rental companies, small neighborhood supermarkets and a 7-Eleven. ATMs can also be found here. Also on the main road there are a number of hotels and bars, often you pay less for the same quality, only you have no sea view.

The Three Sisters Restaurant on this street is very popular, here they serve fresh Thai and international dishes. You can go there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the high season the waiting times can increase considerably.

Where Else Garden & Restaurant is a nicely decorated restaurant & bar. Everything that can be found on the beach is used here as decoration. A special place with good food!

Also on this through road is Pinky Bungalow, a nice budget hotel with well maintained rooms and a swimming pool. Pinky Bungalow is also included in our list of best budget hotels on Koh Lanta.

Koh Lanta is a lovely island to explore by scooter or car. You bypass the high taxi prices and you can visit nice places at your leisure. We have a very good experience with Lanta Sky. You can rent a scooter or car from them that they bring and pick up again when it suits you best. If you want to rent a car you have to leave your passport, that is Koh Lanta everywhere. Renting a scooter without your passport is often possible when you pay a few thousand baht deposit. Are you going to Mu Koh Lanta National Park? Then ask for a powerful scooter, especially if you want to go with two people on a scooter. The roads to the National Park go up a lot and that calls for some extra power.
