IN THE PICTURE #14

In ‘In the Picture’ photographers from all over the world share their 10 most beautiful pictures of Thailand. See Thailand through the photographer’s lens, read background stories about the pictures and learn more about the beautiful Thailand! The last of the year 2020 is for Hendrik Buesink from Switzerland but now lives in beautiful Thailand. And as the picture above nicely shows, there is light on the horizon, come on hold on!

Hello, please introduce yourself.

Hello dear readers of Thailand Magazine,

My name is Hendrik, born in Geneva (Switzerland) and since childhood I have always loved to travel. At the moment I live in a place in the south of Thailand called Lang Suan. I started working just after my studies in 1987 at the age of 20, but found myself a little too young to start my career so early. Therefore, and to make sure I wouldn’t miss something important in my life, I quit my job in 1990 and traveled around the world for a year.

But once you’ve started traveling, it’s hard to stop, so I took my backpack with me in 1994 and traveled through South America again for a few months. After those rewarding experiences I went back to a normal life, made a career in finance and started a family…

But my travel addiction was never far away…And that is why I travel again with this insane feeling of happiness that I carry with me during my travels around the world. Traveling is so great, just like Thailand!

A sign with 7-Elephant instead of 7-Eleven

Koh Phitak is a very small island without cars and motorcycles. Also no 7-Eleven, so the owner of a number of supermarkets on the island made this improvised sign himself and called his stores 7-Elephant. Hilarious! By the way, Koh Phitak is located in the south of Thailand between Chumphon and Surat Thani.

Sunset in a street of Lang Suan

Sunset in the middle of a street in Lang Suan, the city where I now live with great pleasure.

What is your favorite destination in Thailand?

On the west coast of Thailand lies Koh Phayam. This is one of my favorite destinations in Thailand because it is still quite untouched and there are no cars driving around the island….

Which place / destination in Thailand is still on your wish list to visit?

Chiang Rai, Pai, Kanchanaburi, Sukothai and many other places in Thailand.

#3

Two children in traditional attire at the Doi Wat Suthep temple in Chiang Mai

Two small children in traditional clothing taken with a telephoto lens in the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep Temple of Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand.

Which place / destination do you recommend our readers to visit and why?

If you are a diving or snorkeling enthusiast then you should go to Koh Tao. Visit Koh Phayam if you still want to be on a fairly unspoiled island. Despite that there are plenty of activities to do

Where do you like to eat?

The Oldtime Café in Chumphon because they have a live band every night that plays, you can eat there and it’s not that far from where I live. Also the inside of the restaurant has a nice old style decoration.

Chumphon beach

And beautiful view of the beach of Chumphon from the Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak temple.

Name a nice coffee shop or bar where our readers can drop by.

The Beer Lab Chiang Mai is a great place where you can order hundreds of different beers and where the atmosphere is great, especially on the terrace. Highly recommended if you are in Chiang Mai (and like beer haha).

What is your favorite Thai dish?

Pad Thai and Som Tam (Thai papaya salad) because it is healthy and tasty food. It also makes my tummy very happy!

#6

Nui Beach in Phuket

Nui Beach located in a bay in the south of the island of Phuket

Sunset during the market in Lang Suan in southern Thailand

Sunset in Pak Nam (in the Lang Suan district). This picture was taken during a picnic at the market where I often eat with my friends.

What is your favorite accommodation in Thailand?

The Kaomai Lanna Resort in Chiang Mai! A fantastic place with old walls and covered with beautiful climbing plants. It always feels quiet and exotic.

Do you have a (travel) tip that might come in handy in Thailand?

Go meet the local people, they have the best advice to visit and to eat and if not they always know someone else who has. And they are so friendly. Don’t get stuck with only farangs (white western people) all the time hahaha

Is there a Thai phrase or word our readers need to learn?

Pai o kalang kai = I’m going to do some exercise.
