DR. SAAD BLIND MASSAGE HEALER
Before we left for Koh Yao Yai we already heard about Dr. Saad Blind Massage Healer. For some people he would have worked miracles. People who have been in pain for years were relieved of the pain after a few massages by Dr. Saad. That sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?
Who is this man? Dr. Saad is an almost completely blind masseur and calls himself a medical masseur. The sign on the roadside says he can change your life through medical massage and reflexology. All kinds of pain and many discomforts would benefit from a massage from Dr. Saad.
It all sounds a bit over the top, but by now there are quite a few success stories known about him. You can read the reviews on TripAdvisor and his own website (see details in the InfoBox at the bottom of this article).

Normally such an all-rounder who is very convinced of himself is a very good reason for us to keep on riding. But when we were discovering the island with the scooter and by coincidence saw the Dr. Saad sign along the road we became curious. We decided to take a look anyway.

At random!
We drove on good luck into the marked path and somewhere in the field stood a small bamboo hut on poles. A couple of cheerful children came running towards us and showed us the way. Later they turned out to be the grandchildren of Dr. Saad. Somewhat carefully we walked to the hut in the field to see if Dr. Saad was there. The famous masseur of Koh Yao Yai doesn’t always seem to be there and most people make an appointment long in advance. But we were lucky! The friendly man had already heard us because he was already waiting in the doorway. We were invited to come in.

The massage…What does it cost?
Doctor Saad came to us as a friendly and funny man, but the price of 800 baht he asked for an hour of massage is really good money by Thai standards. In the end we arrived at an amount that both parties were satisfied with. When Dr. Saad asked me if I was bothered by something and I said that my back was bothering me he answered with the mysterious words; I thought so already….
I was allowed to sit on the treatment table and Dr. Saad soon started exerting pressure with his elbow and forearm, mainly on my back. There were fewer stretching exercises as you often have with a Thai massage and at some moments it wasn’t a gentle massage at all. So you are warned.

Firm massage and loud music
Meanwhile, Riel and Dr. Saad got talking and soon the conversation was about music and a few knobs of the stereo system were turned. Of course we had seen the boxes already but the bass coming out of the boxes exceeded our expectations! The whole hut trembled with it, a kind of massage in a massage so to speak! Dr. Saad loves music and also likes to hear your music. So our phone was plugged in and our own favorite music sounded loud from the boxes. In the meantime I could not release much because of the firm massage. The massage wasn’t really relaxing, especially in combination with the music. If you don’t want to hear music during the treatment session that is probably possible, it’s not that it was forced on you.

The result?
Before I started the massage my expectations weren’t that high, to be honest. I didn’t realise it right away but my back was really less painful, something that bothered me for a while anyway. Doctor Saad advises to take at least three massages if you want to get rid of pain. Who knows what the results will be! Personally I thought the massage was good, not relaxing and sometimes even painful but effective. I think it’s just what you come for. I thought the experience was worth all the money, a massage in a bamboo hut with loud music, you don’t find that anywhere else than on the island Koh Yao Yai?
