BAMBOO BEACH (MAIPHAI BAY)

Bamboo Beach is located at almost the southernmost tip of Koh Lanta. It is the last beach you will encounter on your way to Mu Koh Lanta National Park and is therefore next to Maiphai Bay also called Last Beach. But it’s not really the last beach, because Mu Koh National Park also has a beach. But here you first have to pay park fee. Bamboo Beach is far away from the hustle and bustle and is therefore a nice beach if you are looking for peace and relaxation.

The bay is very beautiful with white sand and has nothing but green in the background, a beautiful picture! The sea is wonderfully clear but water shoes are handy because there are rocks as well. Bamboo Beach is one of the few beaches where you can snorkel in the dry season. The most chance to see fish is on the sides of the bay. The beach is quiet but because Bamboo Beach is on the route to the Mu Koh National Park some people make a stop here. But it is never really crowded on this beautiful beach! In the evening all the people are gone again and chances are that you are on the beach with only a handful of others.

Restaurants Bamboo Beach

On Bamboo Beach are 2 restaurants and both are located directly on the beach with sea views. The evenings here consist of watching the sun disappear into the sea while enjoying a nice meal and a cool drink with the sounds of nature in the background.

Right on the side of Bamboo Beach is Baan Phu Lae. This restaurant belongs to the hotel of the same name. Thai and western dishes are served and there is a nice bar on a platform on the beach. In the middle of the bay is the Ahoy Bar, this belongs to the La Laanta Hideaway Resort and has very cozy places on the beach for dining. Sometimes the restaurants put on a fire dance show.

On the main road about 5 minutes walk is the Bamboo Bay Valley Restaurant. This simple but cool restaurant is built high against the hill. This gives you a beautiful view over Bamboo Bay!

Sleeping at Bamboo Beach

If you want to sleep directly at Bamboo Beach you can choose between Baan Phu Lae and the La Laanta Hideaway Resort. Baan Phu Lae has basic cabins with a small porch to sit on overlooking the sea. The La Laanta Hideaway Resort is a 3 star resort and has slightly more comfort with a swimming pool and sunbeds on the beach. This is really a place to hide from the rest of the world!

Once in a while some monkeys come along on the beach and sometimes even a few cows. Apart from that there is not much happening on Bamboo Beach, but that is probably exactly the reason you are going here! If you want to see more of the island, it is advisable to rent a scooter or car. Keep in mind that the roads in this part of the island are sometimes steep and winding. You can rent a scooter at the Baan Phu Lae Hotel.  If you would like you can walk to nearby Khlong Chak Beach, the distance is about 1 km and you are 20 minutes away.

Koh Lanta is a lovely island to explore by scooter or car. You bypass the high taxi prices and you can visit nice places at your leisure. We have a very good experience with Lanta Sky. You can rent a scooter or car from them that they bring and pick up again when it suits you best. If you want to rent a car you have to leave your passport, that is Koh Lanta everywhere. Renting a scooter without your passport is often possible when you pay a few thousand baht deposit. Are you going to Mu Koh Lanta National Park? Then ask for a powerful scooter, especially if you want to go with two people on a scooter. The roads to the National Park go up a lot and that calls for some extra power.
